Only Suckers Save for Retirement

Only suckers save for retirement. Why would you sacrifice now for something so far away? Life is short and you need to live it. Besides, what you earn is barely enough to pay the bills and have a little fun.

Retirement is such a distant unreality so saving for something which may never come seems stupid. Spending your money on stuff now is far more practical than saving it for retirement.

Budgeting and Saving

You don’t want to live your life pinching pennies to squeeze out a little extra for savings. It’s far better going for the gusto in everything. When you get a raise or bonus, don’t sock it away. Not when you can buy a new car, jet skis, a boat, etc., and use the extra income to make the payments. Having any of that kind of stuff will change your life. Everyone knows that.

Social Security

When you get old and finally decide to retire your Social Security will cover your retirement. That’s why they take it out of your checks. Who knows how much you will get from Social Security so far out into the future. Who cares that certain government types have a hard-on to cut it. Whatever it is you will just make it work. That’s the way to roll. The government won’t let you down. Because things always work out.

Making Retirement Ends Meet

Worse comes to worse and Social Security is a bit short, your future-self can make a few cuts to stretch those dollars. No sense worrying about that now. You will be old. Old people don’t have fun or want to do anything. You will get all of those senior discounts so there is no problem. Now is the time to live it up and have fun.

Saving and Investing

All of the information about your 401K benefit, company match, IRAs and investments to select from are too complicated. Why waste your time? You find all that stuff boring anyway. What does make sense is getting the biggest take-home payroll check you can get. Because going out on Friday and Saturday nights costs a lot of money. There is no way you should just be sitting at home or doing something lame at this time of your life. That’s for those weird frugal lifestyle suckers.

You Deserve It

You work hard and play hard. Those quarterly trips to Vegas with your friends to blow off steam, gamble, drink, catch some shows, and just cut-loose is what makes you tick. All of those selfies in various states of drunkenness all over town are hilarious and will be something to look at and the topic of party conversations for years to come. Not to mention the fun your Tweets and Facebook posts about what you are doing blowing money brings to everyone. Nobody wants to see that end.

Conclusion.

Alright. Time to get real. I don’t advocate any of the above. Unfortunately there are too many people who don’t save for retirement. They always think there will be tomorrow to do that.

I am in no way trying to offend anyone trapped in poverty or stuck in low paying jobs. But I am openly mocking those who do make decent money and has the above type thoughts and attitudes. I hope it pisses those people off to start really looking at their future.

I do know someone who pissed their future away. They still have the same above attitude. Instead of regret they are just angry at everyone else for their now older self’s financial mess. It’s other people’s fault they are were they are. The boats, jet skies, and all the other consumerist trappings are long gone. Things are starting to get very real for them.

As the old saying goes, “time flies” and before you know it you will be retiring. You will retire (that is if you live long enough) on your terms or not and you will need to have money saved. Only suckers save for retirement, NOT!

Do you know someone who doesn’t save for retirement and the excuses they use?

  1. I too worry when people just keep putting it off and thinking that one day they’ll “get around” to it…and don’t. I’m seeing the negative end result with a couple of family members and the situation ain’t pretty. I swore to myself that I would not allow that to happen to DH and I, so far we’re on track!

    1. Hello Kassandra. Thanks for the comment. I always tell people just start saving something right now while time is your ally. I will share that the reason for this post was because of someone close to me too that would never listen to my advise about saving until very late and ended up retiring way to early due to their health issues for what little money they have coming in. As you say, it ain’t pretty. Their only income source is a small pension when after medical insurance deductions they net $900 a month. Who can live well on that? Very few. Financial desperation causes even more poor decisions.

    1. Thanks Debt Debs. This post was in response to someone close to me who is struggling in an unplanned early retirement now and all the excuses and lifestyle decisions they made for the last 25 to 30 years are coming back to haunt them in a real and unfortunate way. I tend to have a somewhat sarcastic sense of humor and hopefully this post isn’t too far that way but I think the point is a message needed by many.
      Thanks for the comment.

  2. Wow you were really selling it. It was getting me all worked up! Who is this guy spouting the worst financial advice I have ever heard? I just started following this guy and it turns out he’s a nut job!

    Well done. Well done.

    1. Thanks for the comment CheapMom. Ya, I was in a certain mood when I wrote this. I had just finished visiting with someone close to me that has done all of the things I wrote about in their life and are now paying the price for it. Glad you enjoyed it.
