Retiring Early Retiring Twice

A recent article by Money.msn.com regarding retiring early retiring twice titled “Why you’ll probably retire twice” certainly grabbed my attention. The title appealed to me because I live a retire early and often lifestyle. However the article wasn’t taking any kind of positive stance on this subject like I do.

The article quoted studies and providing statistics about people who retire, some early, and then have to find another job or career because of financial issues. Then these poor people finally retire much later in life. It then provided some advice on how to avoid having to take on additional employment after retirement.

I had to comment with my view of Retiring Early Retiring Twice

I normally don’t feel the need to leave a comment on one of these financial posts but felt compelled to offer a different take on retiring twice or even multiple times. So I left the short little comment below:

Leisure Freak Tommy

The article tries to make it sound like a bad thing to retire twice. I retired at age 51 from a telecommunication engineering career. I define retirement as being free to pursue my passions, rewarding activity, and all the leisure I can handle. That includes my staying open to opportunities that I have an interest in. My retirement #2 at age 56 is a wonderful thing. I accomplish what I want to accomplish and I retire, never looking back. I didn’t have to accept a position in a new field of interest as my retirement is fully funded. But it was a blast learning a new technology, meeting and working with great people, and earning good money while doing it. Here is the trick: Not having to work.  Anything I take on is all gravy both personally and financially. I have a couple of other fields of interest and if the opportunity arises I will do it again. Not that I am necessarily pursuing another career. But there is no telling how many times I may retire. It is an adventure.

Retiring Early Retiring Twice Isn’t Crazy After All

There were many other comments on the article. The majority of thoughtful comments were about how they avoided, avoid, or plan to avoid having to work again after retirement. There were comments that shared my same opinion. Then there are always the political bashing and negative comments.

What I was happy to see when I went back to the article was that I had far more thumbs up ratings than thumbs down. In fact many of the comments that shared my sentiment also had more approvals than not. Which brings me to this post. It just reaffirmed that what this Leisure Freak is doing isn’t crazy after all. There are a lot of like-minded people out there which makes me feel pretty darn good.

I do wonder who believes so against it to leave thumbs down on folks with the retire early and often mindset, or with a retiring early retiring twice strategy. Not that I am against anyone with a different opinion than mine. But I am curious as to their position and would love to know.

Maybe it is just folks that think retirement means never being open to opportunity. Perhaps it is those who believe it is impossible to start another career. To retire and then try something that has always been of interest, lights up our passions, or is fulfilling and rewarding.

I don’t know because there were no replies stating a different opinion to provide a clue as to why they are opposed to what I left as a positive comment about retiring early retiring twice.
